Bird Watching near Puerto Pollensa
Puerto Pollensa is ideally located as a centre for birdwatching. There are excellent mountain, country & coastal walks so you can often combine the pleasure of a lovely walk with keeping an eye out for the splendid birdlife in the various habitats that you pass.
The Boquer Valley is only a short distance to the north of Puerto Pollensa. It is particularly famed for the migrating birds of prey that use it during the spring/early summer & autumn migrations but there are plenty of local residents or summer visitors as well.
If you take the road to Cabo Formentor, the cliffs are a nesting site for the Eleanora's Falcon. However the boat trip is more relaxing and you get a better view of the falcons (May - October) as well as the sea birds.
Any of the mountain walks can be rewarding or even just driving to the gorge Blau or up to Lluc is spectacular. The prize is the rare Black Vulture, very large, gliding overhead.
At a lower level you may be lucky to see a Hoopoe (black & white flutter of its wings as it goes from tree to tree) or hear its soft call - 'pooh, pooh, pooh'. Nightingales are common from May and you may be serenaded if you stop for your picnic in a scrubby or wooded area.
The absolute must is a trip to the S'Albufera Marshes. This Reserve is world famous. It is located inland from the hustle and bustle of the coastal development between Alcudia & C'an Picafort. Park on the main road just before the English Bridge and walk to the Reserve entrance (no cars allowed). There is a good visitor centre and you can walk along the designated tracks and visit a number of excellent hides. From these you have a close up view of numerous waders, ducks, herons etc some of which will be on their nests.
Don't forget your camera & binoculars!
